Signup forms

Signup forms turn store visitors into subscribers. Build one in Gro, publish it, and it shows on your Shopify store. Every signup creates or updates a profile, records the consent the shopper gave, and syncs it to Shopify.

Find them under Marketing > Forms.

Type Where it shows
Popup Centred over the page, with the page dimmed behind it.
Flyout A smaller card in a corner of the screen.
Embed Inside your page, in a spot you choose (footer, a landing page).

The editor has four steps.

  1. Design. Click any block in the preview to edit it: image, heading, text, the fields, the button and the small print. The preview is the real form, shown over your own site.
  2. Display. When the form shows (as soon as the page loads, after a delay, after scrolling, on exit intent, when an element is clicked, or after a number of page views) and who sees it (new or returning visitors, devices, page rules). You can also hide it from people who are already subscribed and choose how long to wait before showing it again.
  3. Signup. What happens after someone signs up: a thank you message, a discount code, or a redirect.
  4. Review. Publish. Publishing replaces the version shoppers see now.

Click the fields block to choose what you collect: email (always on), first name, last name and phone. Each field can be required or optional.

When you collect a phone number, a country code picker sits next to it. It starts on the shopper’s country, so most people never need to touch it.

The Consent line under the fields block becomes a checkbox under the fields, such as “Yes, keep me posted with news and offers by email.” Its wording is saved with every signup as proof of what the shopper agreed to.

  • Start ticked is on by default. The box then starts ticked for shoppers in the US, UK, EU and Australia, where submitting a signup form counts as opting in. It always starts unticked in Canada and other countries.
  • Turn Start ticked off to start it unticked everywhere.
  • A shopper who unticks the box is saved as unsubscribed from email.
  • With no consent line there is no checkbox, and submitting the form counts as consent.

To grow your SMS list from a form:

  1. In the Design step, click the fields block and turn on the Phone field.
  2. Turn on Ask for SMS consent.
  3. Optionally set Texts come from (defaults to your store name) and your Terms and Privacy links (default to your Shopify policy pages).
  4. Publish the form.

Shoppers now see an SMS checkbox under the phone field. It always starts unticked, and its wording follows the country of the phone number, so a US number gets the full US wording and a UK number gets a plain opt in. German numbers confirm by replying YES.

The rules behind this, what Gro stores as proof, and what you still need to do yourself are on SMS consent and compliance. Before you text anyone you also need a registered sender for their country: see Setting up SMS.

  • Popups and flyouts: turn on the Gro signup forms app embed in your Shopify theme. You only do this once, and the Review step links you straight to it.
  • Embedded forms: also add the Gro signup form block where you want the form to sit. The Review step opens the theme editor with the block ready to place.
  • Gro finds the profile by email, or creates one. Names and phone are only filled in where the profile has none, so a form never overwrites better data. The one exception: when a shopper ticks the SMS box, the number they gave is the one that is subscribed.
  • Email and SMS consent are saved with the source (the form), the time and the shopper’s IP, and the exact wording they saw.
  • The shopper’s timezone is read from their browser and saved on the profile, if it has none yet. Campaigns sent “in each recipient’s time zone” use it. If you use the Gro SDK and set a timezone yourself, the form sends that instead.
  • With Shopify connected, the customer is created or updated in Shopify with the same email and SMS consent.
  • The signup counts toward the form’s stats, and the form’s segment if you created one.
