Plain text email support

The plain text email editor with a live preview, showing a message using the person.first_name merge tag rendered as 'Hi John,'.

You can now send plain text emails in Gro, with full support for merge tags and custom data. No design, no layout, no images. Just a message that reads like it came from a person.

Write your copy, drop in merge tags like {{ person.first_name }}, and see exactly how it renders in the live preview before you send. It’s free for everyone to use.

Why plain text

  • Stronger delivery. Plain text emails carry less weight and fewer of the signals that trip spam filters, so more of them reach the inbox instead of the promotions tab or junk.
  • Feels personal. Without branded templates and big images, the email reads like a one to one note from you, which tends to earn more opens and more replies.
  • Quick to write. No template to build or design to fuss over. Type the message and send.
  • Full personalisation. Merge tags and custom data work just like they do in your designed emails, so every message can still be tailored to the customer.

Ways to use it

  • Founder notes. A short personal message from you lands better in plain text than a polished template.
  • Win backs and check ins. A simple “is everything ok with your subscription?” feels human and gets replies.
  • Announcements. Tell customers about a change, a restock, or a new product without the overhead of a full design.

How it works

Pick Plain text when creating an email, write your message, and use Insert merge tag to personalise it. The preview on the right shows the rendered version in real time. When it looks right, save and send.
